Why Did God Send A Flood?

ark

I’ve heard some people say they think it was awful for God to send a flood and kill all those people. I’ve heard the same about Sodom too. I’ve always accepted God’s judgement on those people because by reading the rest of the Bible and seeing how Jesus lived, I know he is wise, loving and just.  Personally, I wouldn’t want to live next door to Sodom and I doubt you would either if you read the story. (It isn’t about gay people; it’s about rape and murder.) And of course, I’ve heard those who don’t believe there ever was a flood. Luckily, we have the right to believe whatever we want.

As I was reading Genesis along with a Bible Commentary, I found out there are those who say it may be that God foresaw the inhabitants of the world killing each other off; that their death was inevitable. The original Hebrew could mean that.

The Bible says, “Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.”

Pulpit Commentary

“…while a third, that the end spoken of is the issue to which the moral corruption of the world was inevitably tending (Keil, Lange), does not materially differ from the first.”

“has come before me” …is in the contemplation of my mind as an event soon to be realized” (Murphy), with perhaps a glance at the circumstance that man s ruin had not been sought by God, but, as it were, had thrust itself upon his notice as a thing that could no longer be delayed.

There was one man on earth who was not evil and violent: Noah. If God had not intervened, perhaps the violent people of the earth would have killed him and his family and then each other.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

Genesis 6:5

Thank God we cannot say that of the world today. There are many people filled with the Spirit of God yet in the world; there are many people who have not given themselves over to evil completely.

I do see this similarity between now and Noah’s day: violence. Violence is filling the world more and more, or at least it seems so. But there is also something new: global warming. The Bible speaks of days of immense heat. Are we going to destroy ourselves through global warming as the antedeluvians were going to destroy themselves through violence?

This is written about in Isaiah:

The earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the exalted of the people of the earth fade away. The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, broke the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.   Isaiah 24:4-6

“Lift up your eyes to the sky, Then look to the earth beneath; For the sky will vanish like smoke, And the earth will wear out like a garment And its inhabitants will die in like manner; But My salvation will be forever, And My righteousness will not wane.”

Isaiah 5:16

“The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun,

and it was given to it to scorch men with fire.”   Rev.16:8

One of the last plagues on earth is the sun burning people. God won’t be doing it to us, it will be the result of losing the layers above the earth that protect us. It will be the result of the sin of polluting the earth.

What did Jesus say about this time:

“For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.”   Matthew 24:21,22

“And the nations were enraged, and Your wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.   Rev. 11:18

“Of old You founded the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.

Even they will perish, but You endure; And all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.   Psalm 102:25

We are now destroying the entire world with our pollution. Our only hope is in God, who will change our hearts into a heart like his: forgiving, loving, giving and compassionate. Our only hope for a new life in heaven is to give our life to Him who made us and died for us.

“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven.

And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.   Mathew 24:30,31

We may die before Jesus comes for us; or we may be alive when he comes to save us from a dying planet. We don’t know, but we can know him who knows everything and trust him as he leads us. We can find peace and shelter under the shadow of his wings.

  1. I just watched part of the movie “Noah”. I could not believe how distorted the movie depiction was. I’d heard pastor proclaim it a good movie, but it was all wrong. It portrayed God as evil and Noah a personification of that evil. I had to switch it off, knowing there are people out there who will believe and be even more convinced that God should not be followed.
I became so angry and upset. The pastors that proclaimed it “good” reasoned that perhaps people would look it up and perhaps read the Bible, questioning “Is this true?” But, to think that or wish it to be true is naive. your explanation is sound. Very well defended. Thank you!

    1. I also was upset about that movie. The Noah character was awful. I read the director say it was inspired by the story of Noah, but did not follow the Bible story. I don’t know why they made it. I guess they thought it would make money.

      1. It makes me wonder who they get to fund such atrocities? I was thinking how much better it would have been sticking to the facts. One of the things they did do right was how they depicted the evil that existed in those days. They were pretty disgusting an legitimized God’s reasons to destroy them. I would have liked to see the Nephelim (sp) or the fallen angels depicted accurately, but that was never their intent. To be accurate that is.

        1. I know most people believe the fallen angels had sex and children with the daughters of me, but I believe that verse means that believing men married those who did not believe or worshiped idols. But, I could be wrong, it is kind of open to interpretation.

I do know something about Hollywood movies, and that is some of them are written and backed by Gnostics. That religion is very evil. They side with Lucifer and blame Jesus that he was cast out of heaven. They hate God. The Matrix series was made by Gnostics. Remember Trinity was killed at the end? Neo was the “New Man,” who didn’t need God or something. My cousin had a tape on this subject and that’s all I know about it, except I did look up Gnosticism online.

I think the entertainment industry as a whole is backed by mostly evil. The supernatural TV shows are a part of it, I think. But, I can’t do anything about it, so I don’t worry about it. God still rules in the heavens and he has to let sin play out so that it will never, ever happen again in the universe.

          1. Well the scriptures do say, the sons of God looked down and saw the women to be beautiful and began taking them as wives. It’s interesting that it talks about them coming to women not men. But in Gen 6:4 it refers to the Nephilim beings as the “heroes and legends of old”, which could possibly be where the stories of Thor and Zeus and the presumed myths came from and just imagine the powers their children may have had.
I’m part of a group of film industry people who pray for those in Hollywood. We all strive to improve and affect change by what we develop and write. Through HPN the Hollywood Prayer Network. It is relatively new but seems to be growing.
In any case, you are correct what happens be it climate change or whatever, God is in control and trust that he’s already got it all figured out.

            1. Yes, perhaps the stories of Thor, Zeus etc. were based on real people. It is all very interesting. I’m glad you are helping through the Hollywood Prayer Network. Wonderful. I’ll have to go online and read about it. I know there are many wonderful Christian actors and actresses in Hollywood. In fact, a blog writer I follow told us Carrie Fisher accepted Christ a few years ago and her brother is a Christian. Oh how happy that made me. I’ll bet Debbie was a Christian too.

              1. That is good news. I’m sure we will be getting notification soon. Yes, look them up. I believe anyone can join the network. Check it out. It was funny how God had connected me to them. I was getting discouraged with my writing, wondering how I could compete with all the garbage people seem to gravitate to. I had just moved here and knew I needed to meet people and how important networking is but I wanted to be the right people. I got this link for a class on how to navigate Hollywood. So, I signed up for it and low and behold it was a group lead by Christian minded people. I didn’t know until the first speaker started speaking about how God had lead him in his work. I started googling him and found that he does many Christian based works, so I started talking to different ones and learned they were Christian, at least the ones I met. The classes are open to anyone but it is run by Christians. The next weekend course was lead by a pastor and professor at the Christian college in LA. I still network with other groups but it was through them I met the staff of HPN and joined.

              2. I looked up Hollywood Prayer Network and was thrilled with what they are doing. Prayer is our most powerful weapon, I think. I signed up for the newsletter and read a bit of December’s. Thanks, Jolie.
